Smartphone Camera Face-Off: Seven Phones Put to the Test - thompsonduccies1960
One of the biggest trends in smartphones right straightaway is toward models equipped with powerful, senior high school-remainder cameras. Phone manufacturers are no longer contented to play the megapixel game, either. As we saw in our old smartphone camera tests, having more megapixels doesn't necessarily transform into taking better photos. Two phones with 8-megapixel sensors can capture very unusual-looking pictures. This year, smartphone manufacturers are focusing happening image processing, high-tech controls, and full-featured interfaces for their cameras. Many smartphone cameras now come with a wide-eyed array of shooting modes, including panorama, HDR (high dynamic range), and macro modes.
The PCWorld Labs one-to-one some of the hottest smartphones to come out this year in a head-to-head battle to realise which one rates as the best camera phone.
The Contenders
We tested seven phones running 3 different operating systems across four carriers to see which model had the best all-around camera and camcorder. For T-Mobile, we dependable the Samsung Galax S Blaze 4G and the HTC One S (both Android phones). For A&adenosine monophosphate;T, we elect the HTC Giant II and the Nokia Lumia 900 (both Windows Phones). From Sprint, we chose the LG Viper 4G LTE (Android). And for Verizon, we used the Orchard apple tree iPhone 4S. We also threw in the T-Mobile myTouch Slide 4S (Android), our previous champion for still-life photos.
We were particularly interested to hear how the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC One S would perform. When Nokia introduced the Lumia 900 at CES 2012, the troupe ready-made a big handle about the camera's f2.2-aperture Carl Zeiss lens. Similarly, HTC emphasizes the photographic camera technology in its One smartphone line of business. The HTC One S has the HTC ImageChip, which supports an f2.0 aperature. We were besides nosy about how well the HTC Titan would do, since it has a 16-megapixel camera–the highest megapixel numerate of all of our phones.
How We Tested
With each phone, we used a short version of our regular testing methodology for peak-and-shoot cameras. Our analysts in the PCWorld Labs shot a still-life scene using automatic settings in an contrived daylight environment; we turned the flash off to test photograph and color levels. We then shot an image of a target resolution graph to test how advisable the camera detector could charm sharp details. We judged the still-life photos for exposure, color accuracy, and bite; we scored the photos of the resolution chart based on sharpness and distortion.
We asked a panel of four judges to canvas a printout of each image and to evaluate foursome components of image tone for each–photo, color truth, sharpness, and distortion. The Book of Judges assigned unity of five Logos lashing to for each one image-quality component of each photo photographic print: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Swell, operating theatre Superior.
For video testing, we shot a moving scene of a miniature Ferris wheel and train. We unadjustable all ring to a tripod, and so took cardinal test clips. While shot each test time, we played the same audio clip through speakers to evaluate how well each phone picked up healthy. In the offse test video clip, we shot in buttony indoor ignition. In the second test video clip, we shot with the command overhead lights turned off and a floor lamp turned on rear the camera to evaluate degraded-light footage. Our judges evaluated all videos on the same five-word-score musical scale that they used for still images.
Overall Still-Image Results
To our surprise, the T-Peregrine myTouch Slide 4G continued to rule supreme in our subjective tests of shut up image quality. The myTouch received the highest total image-quality score (82.5) and was the only phone to earn an overall Scripture grade of Very Full. The iPhone 4S finished second, with an overall image-quality score of 79.3 (and a word make of Good). At the other end of the rankings, the HTC One S picked up the lowest overall score (72.4) from our panel of Judges and was the only phone to receive an overall give-and-take grade of Fair. This result sharply contradicts our full rated reappraisal of the HTC One S, which praised its variable camera modes and people of colour accuracy. You can judge the HTC One S's images against the competition's on the live paginate of this story.
The myTouch Slide 4G did exceptionally well in our still life comparisons. Information technology outscored its rivals for colouration accuracy, sharpness, and exposure. The iPhone 4S fairly consistently took the second-highest scores succeeding to the myTouch 4G, though the LG Viper scored high than the iPhone 4S for pic, and the Nokia Lumia 900 scored high than the iPhone 4S for sharpness. Whol of the smartphones scored relatively poorly in our overrefinement tests–a fairly common occurrence with the smartphone cameras we test. The sensors in smartphone cameras simply aren't big enough to earn strong Simon Marks on this measure.
Total Video Quality Results
Though the myTouch 4G Slide henpecked our still image-quality tests, it tanked along our video-quality tests. The winner for telecasting was the iPhone 4S, which achieved the highest mediocre scores for regular-bright and low-light television, and for audio quality. Finishing a close second was the last-place finisher in our still-life category, the HTC One S. The Peerless S actually equal with the iPhone 4S for low-ignitor and regular-sandy video, only lost the conflict collect because of its slightly lower score for audio quality. The Samsung Galaxy Blaze achieved the highest grade of sound character in video recording.
Conclusion
We'll continue to perform testing along earphone cameras throughout the year, and we'll update our test results as we fork out fres phones. We've posted our test photos on the last page of this article, so get a load at them and sound off along your favorites in the comments. These tests, of course, are not the be all and end all for smartphone cameras. E.g., extraordinary cameras do very well in natural light, which we did non test in this subjective evaluation. Others do better after you pull off the settings operating theater use bound shooting modes. The good news is that none of the smartphones we looked at took bad photos–all achieved scores of finer than 70, and steady that mark would have placed them in the amphetamine reaches of the Fairish interval, fit above a Poor word score rating.
It's exciting to see so many manufacturers focalisation on camera engineering science. Victimization your smartphone as your main camera has two huge benefits: You always have IT with you, and it's a snap to share pictures from. Traditionally, mediocre image timber has been the compromise masses accepted when relying on a smartphone tv camera. But nowadays, image timber is steadily up–and IT will solitary aim better.
